Portugal becomes the third most peaceful country in the world (and second in Europe)

Iceland and New Zealand remain at the top of the index of the most peaceful countries at the global level drawn up by the Institute of Economy and Peace. Iceland ranks first since 2008. The novelty is that Portugal rose two positions compared to the previous year and entered the world podium, as the third most peaceful country in the world. Among European countries, it is in second place, only behind Iceland, according to the Global Peace Index of 2019.

Portugal stands out alongside Kosovo and Norway as one of the countries where the perception of the acceptance of migrants has grown more. Already the neighboring Spain is only for 32nd place in the list, having dropped three positions within a year and France slips two places to the 60th.

Despite this performance, Portugal is among the countries in which the perceptions of security between men and women are more disparate - above 22 percentage points of difference. In terms of international politics, Portugal appears as one of the three countries in which the perception of American leadership has deteriorated more - alongside Belgium and Norway. A fall that exceeds 40 percentage points.

Afghanistan has replaced Syria this year as the least peaceful country in the world and Yemen has for the first time entered the group of five less peaceful states, the 2019 Global Peace Index released today reveals.

According to the 13th Annual Global Peace Index (GPI) report prepared by the Institute for Economy and Peace in Sydney, Europe remains the most peaceful region in the world, with a slight improvement, and the Middle East region and North Africa is still the least peaceful.
